Ramon Andersson is one of Australia’s most successful coaches in Sprint Canoeing. He has been Head Coach of the Western Australian Institute of Sport (WAIS) Sprint Canoeing Program since 2003 taking the program from a small part-time program, on the verge of being axed to one of the most successful programs at WAIS, where it won program of the year three times between 2007 and 2012. Ramon has coached a number of Olympic and National team athletes including dual Olympian and 2008 Bronze medallist Lisa Russ (nee Oldenhof), as well as World Cup winner, and 2012 Olympian Alana Nicholls, and three time, K2 200m National Champions and 2012 6th placed Olympians, Jesse Phillips and Steve Bird.
Ramon has been a National team coach since 2006 and was one of the coaches on the 2012 London Olympic Team. Ramon was named the "2011 Australian Canoeing Coach of the Year" and was awarded the highest coaching award in Western Australia when he was named "Western Australia Sports Federation (WASF) Coach of the Year in 2011".
As an athlete he has been one of Australia’s most successful canoeists, winning 29 Nationals titles in Sprint and Marathon between 1987 and 2000. His career highlight was winning a Bronze medal in the K4 1000m at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, and backing up 8 weeks later to win the Marathon World Championship in K2. He has also won a silver and two bronze medals from other World Championships, plus a further 9 World Cup medals.
In 1992 and 1993 he was named "WASF Sportsperson of the Year" making him the first male athlete to win the award two years in succession. He was also named "WAIS Athlete of the Year" for 1992/93 and was a runner up for the AIS (Brisbane-based) Athlete of the Year in 1992. In 1995 Ramon was struck down with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome which sidelined him for 10 months, however, he successfully beat the condition and made the K4 1000m crew for 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.
Ramon has a degree in Physical Education and a Diploma of Education, spending his early working years as a secondary high school teacher. He has also earned many years of management experience whilst working at Australia Post between 1995 and 2012.
